I hope you’re ready for the onslaught of fall planting promotions. It’s either happening right now or coming to a media outlet really, really soon in your neighborhood. We’ll get to listen to the glories of gardening in the fall.

But if you’re at all like me, you’re somewhat tired of gardening and all the necessary gardening chores. It seems like I’ve been dragging hoses through the heat forever across miles of gardens. I’ve watered enough heat-struggling containers to last me this season indeed. I’ve hand-bombed truckloads of mulch, skids of paving stone, piles of topsoil in building new raised beds and planted the same number of perennials I used to plant 30 years ago when setting in my commercial trial gardens.

And yeah, fall is a glorious time of the year – cool, insect-free, colorful in its own way and I have no problems with those who still have enthusiasm for bashing soil and plants around. Go for it.

I think I’ve almost spent my allotted energy this season and I’m in the mood to take a pass on a lot more work.

I have some seeds to collect – OK I have some daylilies to move – OK I have a few seedling maples to move to nursery beds and a few to move to the landscape – OK I have a few bulbs coming to plant – OK.

But that’s it. Done like a doughnut. There is a limit to the amount of work a body wants to do and I’ve reached mine. Now I want to sit out there and simply enjoy it all.

There. Saying that feels a ton better.

To heck with fall planting, I’m going straight to fall cleanup.

Next year is another year.
