It may not quite have been divine inspiration, but after just a couple of minutes inside Salisbury Cathedral, artist and lighting designer Bruce Monroe knew exactly how he wanted his latest instillation to look.

‘I firmly believe that a building gives all the clues to what will work best,’ says Monroe, who has designed a temporary lighting installation ‘as big as a house’ in the cathedral’s nave. ‘I hope that what I create captures the spiritual essence that pervades the space,’ he says.
The installation, called Light Shower, will be in place until January and comprises 2,000 teardrop shaped diffusers, each set at the end of a fiber optic thread, which cascade down from the Cathedral’s Spire Crossing.
‘In a sense I feel I am paying homage to all those wonderful artisans who worked on the Cathedral, says Monroe. ‘Simply said it’s a great privilege to create something for this great space.
