The Brit Insurance Design Awards may not be as glitzy and smothered in celebs as the music awards which took place earlier in the week, but to us industry folk they are just as exciting and far more important. The awards are an opportunity for the most innovative and forward thinking designers to come together and showcase their work at the Oscars of the design world. Celebrating design from a range of disciplines including architecture, product, graphic, furniture, transport, fashion and interactive, the awards pay homage to some of the most ingenious designs from the past 12 months. The jury headed by broadcaster and critic, Stephen Bayley, will decide on category winners and an overall winner from the shortlist, which was announced last month. Last year’s winner was the Folding Plug by Min-Kyu Choi. This has revolutionised a humble, but essential piece of everyday equipment.
Dyson’s Air Multiplier™ fan, which has been shortlisted for the product category, works very differently to conventional fans. It uses Air Multiplier™ technology to draw air in and amplify it up to 18 times. With no blades or grills, they’re much safer than standard fans.
Also shortlisted for the product category is the Apple iPad. The latest offering from the vast Apple family offers the user a brand new way of working and playing with this unique tablet-style computer.
A list of all the shortlisted entries can be found at www.designmuseum.org and the winner will be announced at the awards dinner on 15 March. An exhibition of all the shortlisted entries will take place at the Design Museum, Shad Thames from 16 February – 7 August.
