The clients who is a young couple with social lifestyle ask to the Herbst Architects to built a private holiday homes on the spectacular hillside site in North of Auckland. It is presents a serious challenges for the husband and wife design team, Nicky and Lance Herbst. This hillside residence with wonderful-views was acknowledges the hybrid nature of the house/bach brief by articulating the building in 2 parts. A rectilinear spiral block wall seats the building into the steep landscape and orders the site, while providing level areas and separate guest accommodation. A lightweight one bedroom bach sits lightly on and cantilevering over the plinth element. The bach component of the building thrusts forward toward the expansive views to the south while the roof peels open towards the north to allow penetration of sunlight. A sense of privacy from the proximate overlooking neighbours is achieved through the positioning of a screen device on the deck. At night, a soft yellow glow emanates from the slot windows and light washes beautifully over the slatted timber screen. The home was become a beacon on the hill. Inside, through summer and winter, the house wears its double identity like a chameleon, changing with the seasons and social situations.
