A few weeks ago we were asked if we would like to receive some interior window curtains from Kenney. The focus of these interior curtains was on three areas:

First, these curtains help reduce heating costs in the winter and air conditioning costs in the summer when covering the entire window, certain models more than others. I like saving money.

Second, these cloth Roman type of window coverings can easily be removed and washed by the use of velcro as part of the assembly. I like easy and simple.

Third, these Roman type of window coverings were the first mass produced with no cords for safety. I had never thought about that aspect of window shades or curtains.

As we needed a new pair in one of our bedrooms I thought I would give them a try.

Here is our need.

If you look closely in the left of the picture above, you will see that the cord looks extremely short. That is because the cord broke about a year ago. Here is a close up picture for you showing the broken cord:

Hence our need. And, since the bedroom has two windows and the same window shades on both, if you are going to replace one of them you need to replace both.

Take a look at the same type of corded interior window shade when it is pulled up. Specifically, look at how long that cord is on the right. And, that is with the curtain not fully pulled up to the top of the curtain assembly.

I have to admit I never thought about it before. That cord could inadvertently choke a small child! Here is a close-up so you can really see how dangerous this could be.

Yes, we could try to rig some type of 3M type of adhesive hook so that we could tie the cord up on the wall when the window was open; however, something tells me that it would not look very nice at all.

This fall Kenney® is introducing its new line of Truly CordFree™ Roman Shades – the first collection of roman shades available in mass retailers with NO CORDS!

According to Keney, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) “…reports that once a month a child between seven month (sic) and 10 years old dies from window cord strangulation and another child suffers a near strangulation.”

Safety first.

Here is what replaces any type of string or cord in the assembly. This is a very simple use of a wand which one twists to raise or lower the Roman Shade rather than any cord.

Another aspect of these new Roman Shades product line I like is that some of the available models are energy efficient. According to Kenney, the models we received “…can reduce the energy lost through a window up to 35%, having significant effect on energy consumption used to heat or cool a home.”

These are certainly thicker than the pair of window shades they are replacing in the bedroom.

For allergy sufferers, especially those suffering from dust and pet dander allergies, you can very, very easily remove the curtain, wash them in your home washing macing and then re-attach the curtain to the metal assembly due to the use of velcro as part of this new product line from Kenney.

It certainly sounds great; but how do they look once installed and speaking of ‘installed’, how was the installation?

That is where we pick things up next time.
